I was in a place that I gave up on trying to lose weight anymore. I did not feel that I was as big as I was until I saw pictures, and then I was forced to look at what everyone else was seeing. I am a mother of five, busy running my family to events, but I was not able to focus on my own health. I was usually able to loose weight but I was not able to keep my weight off and when I gained it back, I added more. I was on 3 different antidepressants, blood pressure medication and I was diagnosed with degenerative joint disease. I already had a ruptured disk in my back and many more disks that were showing degeneration and I was in my thirties. Diabetes is a strong family trait and I wanted to be able to set a better example for my kids.
My husband has always been supportive of my needs and he only wanted me to be happy. We looked at many different options available in the states, of which our insurance would not cover any of the expenses. I had researched the Bariatric Center and I had my concerns because it was in Mexico, and I am not an experienced traveler. I started talking to close friends about weight loss options and I only found a few people that had surgery before, but each one said they were so glad that they did, and they were happy with their results and no regrets.
When I started to reach out to the center, I asked to receive a call because my husband was available at the time- and we received a personal call in less than 5 minutes. The team was able to answer the questions I had and I felt very reassured and comfortable instantly with the staff. The staff was not pushy, only helpful. They assisted with completion of any forms, any questions, they made sure we had everything needed for our trip. They even gave us a reminder to call our credit card company to let them know we were traveling and what expenses to expect so that we did not have any delays for our surgery.
I met a couple of others that were having surgery the same day and we have still been talking almost daily. We met other amazing people at the hotel and hospital from various places in the states.
The care and hospitality was amazing. When I arrived for our surgery day, the nurses had our room decorated with streamers and I though 'Wow, this is really surprising'. Come to find out it was a surprise for Dr. Almonzo's birthday. This made me feel very comfortable and said to me that the staff care about each other, you will not always see that in a 'states' hospital.
In the hotel the medical staff came to our rooms to do our dressing changes, bring us nourishment, give us fluids twice a week, and educate us about our future needs. I felt amazing during my recovery time. When I returned home I was very weak about the first week home but I think a lot of the issue was that I was dehydrated and I struggled with being able to drink enough water. I was a little soar, but I expected that.
I had a check up with my provider at two weeks after the surgery and from 3 days before my surgery to this day I was down 17 pounds. I don't feel hungry and I am taking the fluids in that I need. Once I was able to start the protein shakes, I have been regaining my strength and I am mostly back to my normal activity level. I do get full quickly- of course. I am excited to see where the next year takes me!
